The Bays' Institute. The report of the Boys' Institute Ladles' Auxiliary, presented .it a recent meeting, stated that all the boarders were in excellent health and all were in employment. It was also stated, that the wages earned at the present time by the boys were very low, and the average board paid during the month per boy was 8s 9d. As they received full board it would be roalised that the loss was unavoidably heavy. General satisfaction was expressed at tho condition of the home and the careful housekeeping observed. At tho close of the meeting a motion of sympathy was moved with Mrs. Sol. Myers in the illness of her husband. Mrs. J. Hislop*(presidont) presided. Island Bay Mothers Meet. Over one hundred members attended the recent meeting of the Island BayBerhampore branch of the League of Mothers, held in the Bowling Green Pavilion recently, when Mrs. Hindmarsh presided. A special welcome was given to the visitors. The meeting then joined in a community sing, and, with Mrs. Cook ably assisting at the piano, several well-known favourites wero sung with great enjoyment. The speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Gibbs (an ex-president) gave a most interesting address on the "Girls' Life Brigade," and round the walls the "Brigade Law" and various badges and banners were exhibited. Mrs. Gibbs spoke of the "G.L.8." work in England, then of the work in New Zealand, and finally of the work of her own company in; Island Bay. Miss Ren© Hindmarsh gave an exhibition of wand drill, and Miss Moira Brown a display of ball swinging. In conclusion several girls sang the life 'brigade hymn. • A vote of thauks mo*ved by Mrs. Vickory wus passed to the speaker. Afternoon tea was dispensed. Preserving Butter. A correspondent asks for v method of preserving butter, and liow long tho preservation would last. Concert and Dance at Miramar. A delightful dance was given recently by Miss Zoo Millar and a number of her senior pupils in St. Aden's Hall, miramar. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers and balloons. An enjoyable programme of vocal and elocutionary items, interspersed with novelty dances, was given, a feature of the evening being littlo Peggy Tovey's clever exhibition of the Seann triubbais. Tho vocal and elocutionary programme was contributed to by Misses M. Walker, M. Beveridge, M. McCarthy, M. Kelly, S. Walker, and Mr. G.Baji. Exhibitions of tap dancing were j;iven by Misses Ada Mottram and Adeline Burnett. A dainty supper was served by Megdames Murray, Talkington, Ball, and Tovey. Mr. Murray was M.C. Ngaroma Croquet Club. Tho Ngaroma Croquet Club closed its season with a function at which tho president, Mrs. Matthews, presented

the trophies wou during the season. Mrs. Matthews stated that the season had been a most enjoyable ono, and that the various competitions had been keenly contested. Champion (Kirk 'Button), Mrs. Sargisson; intermediate champion (Matthew Button), Mrs. Pickard; B champion (Wadsworth Button), Mrs. Fairbairn; champion doubles (Wilkinson Brooches), Mesdames Sargisson and Hunter; Castlo Cup and Mrs. Lawrie's trophy, Mrs. Sargisson; run-ner-up (club trophy), Mrs. Fairloy; Wilkinson Memorials Cups and Mrs. Pickard's trophies, Mesdames McPherson and Franks; runners-up (club's trophies), Mrs. Pickard and Mr. Lawdie; clnb doubles (Mrs. Fairley trophies), Mesdames Martin and Fairburn; runners-up (Mrs. Hope's trophies), Mesdames McPherson and Franks); C competitions (Mrs. Frank's trophy), Mrs. Murphy; runner-up (Mrs. Lippitt's trophy), Mrs. Stickells; third (Mrs. Shaw's trophy), Mrs. Noble; Palmer Star, Mrs. Martin; Palmer Ferns, Mesdames Fairbairn and Shaw; May Mallet Brooch, Mrs. Fairbairn. The.president presented tho secretary, Mrs. Martin, with' a beautiful leather bag and a pair of crystal dishes from the members of the club. ■ Woman Cabinet Member. In private life Miss Perkins, Secretary of Labour in the United States Cabinet, is Mrs. Paul Wilson, and the mother of a daughter. Professionally she is one of the ablest sociologists the State of New York has secured to protect the interests of the labouring poor (states a correspondent). Siuce 1929 she has performed the duties of .New York State Industrial Commissioner with energy and courage. During these recent trying years, when her task has been harder, she has campaigned for "a square deal for the worker." Her appointment as tho fir6t lady member of a United States Cabinet is a recognition of her ability and the position woman has won for herself in modern government. Miss Perkins was born in Massachusetts m 1882. • Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary. Very interesting reports of the work done by .. the Wellington Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary were given at their last meeting. It was statod that lonely and friendless patients and their relatives had been visited and greatly helped. The Wellington W.C.T.U., Hataitai League of Mothers, Central League of Mothers, Victoria League, Toe H., League of Women Helpors, St. John Nursing Guild, by service and gifts had all materially assisted in cheering and comforting the patients. The librarian reported the reorganisation of the Victoria Hospital Library, and, the gift of 100 books from the Seatoun League of Mothers and personal friends. The work of the library in tho main hospital was well maintained. The president (Mrs. Pow) welcomed one new member, and thanked the sev-'; oral societies for their work.
