DISTINGUISHED TRIO

AFTERNOON RECEPTION

It is now eleven years since Jascha Spivakovsky .first visited New Zealand, and on that occasion he promised his friends in Wellington that on his next visit he would bring his brother with him. In a charming speech, which be delivered at yosterday afternoon's reception given by the Executive Council and the Women's Auxiliary Committee of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra, in honour of the three musicians, he said that he had more than fulfilled that promise, for, as well as bringing his brother, Tossy Spivakovsky, he bad. also brought Edmund Kurtz, the famous 'cellist. Yesterday's reception, which was a particularly delightful one, was held in the Midland Hotel lounge, where great log fires burned brightly, and red and tawny chrysanthemums formed the decorations. The large number of guests, who were all presented to the visitors, were met by Mrs. Knox Gilmer (president of the Women's Auxiliary) and Mr. D. A. Ewen (president of tho orchestra). Mr. Ernest Dawson (secretary), and Dr. A. F. Hickey (treasurer) assisted in looking after the guests, and all were charmed with the personalities of tho visitors. Mrs. Knox Gilmer wore a tunic frock of beige and black maroeain, a fur-trim-med tweed coat with an orchid spray, and a black felt hat Mr. Ewen, in expressing the good wishes of all to the three musicians, | recalled Jascha Spivakovsky's first visit to Wellington, and welcomed them as "ambassadors of art," bringing as they did the best in music to a country bo far removed from the great music centres. The opportunity of hearing three such musicians on one platform was an unusual one, and he hoped all would be able to take advantage of the opportunity. Mr. Temple White 'extended a welcome also, on behalf of the music teachers of Wellington, many of whom, he said, were at present attending tho conference in the South Island.
