MCGIRR BENEFIT MATCH

To show some practical appreciation of the services rendered to the game by one of its greatest stalwarts in "Wellington over a large number of years, the Wellington Cricket Association has organised a fund in aid of H. JM. McGirr. The fund is to be supplemented by the takings at the Basin Reserve tomorrow and on the following Saturday, when the final matches in the local senior competition are to be played. So well did McGirr retain his form that he was known as the "evergreen," and there have been few more popular figures in local cricket. McGirr must rank as one of the greatest allrounders Wellington has produced, and has given signal service to his club and his province -with „ both bat and ball. His medium-paced bowling lias accounted for the record number of wickets in Plunket Shield matches, ami he has one of the highest batting aggregates in these matches. A confident and. dashing batsman by preference, McGirr could mingle his confidence with doggedness when the occasion demanded, and few who saw it will forget his memorable stand with T. C. Lowry against Auckland at the Basin Reserve, a lew seasons ago. Considerable interest' should be taken in the finnl matches as the result of the championship is still open, and three of the four teams appearing at the Basin have a chance o{ winning. Petone will meet Hutt. and Wellington will play Kilbirnie.
