SHELTERS NEEDED

ORIENTAL 1 BAY BATHERS

COUNCIL IN DOUBT

The City Fathers., have given a good deal of thought to tho question of bathing at Oriental Bay; they do not wish to prohibit bathing there, but undressing and. dressing oa the beach, with only such slight shelter as the seawall affords, is 'altogether against the bylaw. The Eeserves Committee recommended to the council last night that when the estimates for the coming financial year are being drawn, up, consideration, should, be given the possibility of providing dressing shelters at.the bay. .Councillor T. Forsyth opposed the proposal, for he said, there were baths within a hundred yards, and that beach should be reserved for children. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that in any case the council could not erect shelters.on the beach, which was under the control of the Harbour Board. There was another side to the story, Isaid Councillor Appleton, for thousands of people used the beach in preference to the baths. The council should endeavour to provide some accommodation. Councillor "W. Duncan suggested that 'perhaps something could be done to convert the band rotunda into a shelter. Councillor Forsyth: Will that pro-vide-for your thousands? . Councillor J. Meadowcroft, Chairman of the Beserves Committee, said that he had nonobjection to taking1 the clause back, for in any case it would ha^e tc> be reconsidered7 when the - estimates were under .discussion. Certainly sqtiie-'} thing would have to be done, wbetjief the council provided shelter or not.jvi--A councillor: Perhaps iye will have to provide costumes. .!" ■,■.':'■.■■■:€'
