CANADIAN TRADE

MINISTER HOPEFUL

DISCUSSIONS PROCEEDING

An optimistic attitude iv regard to the negotiations which are proceeding between Canada and New Zealand on the question of promoting friendly trading relations between the two countries were expressed hy the Minister of Finance (tho Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) last night. Mr. Coates was also hopeful that the communications between the two countries would result in increased reciprocal trade. Mr. Coates said that tho Now Zealand Dairy Board had been kept in close touch with the situation, and it was exercising its influence with a view to ensuring that nothing of .an \ unpleasant nature occurred between the two countries on the question of dairy produce imports into Canada. "I can give an assurance that every effort is being made to fit in with each other's point of view," said Mr. Coates. "It has to be recognised, of course, that' on this question there are certain influences at work in each country. There seems to be an outcry in Canada every tune a shipment of New Zealand but: ter comes within wireless range. New Zealand, is not sending a great deal of butter to Canada. Our butter is subject to a tariff at five cents a pound, and we contend it does not come into serious competition with Canadian butter. }Ye believe, howover, that there will continue to be a certain market for our butter on account of its quality, particularly in the eastern provinces." Mr. Coates said that the position resulting from the inflation of the exchange could be met during the remaining currency of the agreement, which will expire in May, by the regulation of the exports of New Zealand butter to Canada. "Trade between tho "t wo countries is very lop-sided," he said. "From New Zealand's point of view, butter is about the only commodity we have an opportunity to sell in Canada.
