FRUIT EXPORTS

SEASON IN'PROGRESS

■'■[ The' Dominion's export Season o£ fruit is now in; process, : and'fairly-; large quantiti^ iaie coining .' to *■' hand -daily. Wellington' ,is^ one .of ■the' 'main export centres, .receiving 'fruit: from Blenheim, Mapua, Motueka, Nelson,. Hawke's Bayl poverty Bay,' and Auckland, although fruit is also shipped; from Auckland. ■The firet of :this,iseaspn's expert fruit trom the South Island was.shipped to Wellington at the beginning of this month, and a steady, flow'has-been arriving regularly, "Apples are 'coming! in mainly ■ at present, although, pears and plums have also-been.brought to.the city in smaller quantities,. The export season is at its height during March, and in-May and June fruif/is placed in cold storage to be shipped at intervals! between August and December. The New -Zealand Fruit' Export Control Board handles, exports^ and up to yesterday .26,010 cases of this, season's fruit had 'been brought ;to'"Wellington. - The tollowing quantities of":apples, in cases, have been brought from the districts mentioned:—Nelson (including. Mapua• and Motueka), 16,011; Maribbrough, -845: Auckland, 2590; Hawke's Bay, '6331: Povertyßay, 233.. Thirty-four cases of pears were brought from Nelson by the ferry i steamer Matangi oil 4, and 100 cases of plums were railed from -Poverty cay. lhese quantities are for export only, and do not include the daily cupPfn? tO,, the city for" local consumption. _. ihe.Shaw, Savjll, and Albion Company's steamer Tamaroa, which left Wellington on February 8 for Southampton and Lon. don^took 13,535 caees of apples for the English markets. . Line> Port Wellington,', which is now loading .fruit at Glasgow Wharf, will leave to-morrow for London. She ia chartered, to carry; 37^000 cases, and at close of,.operations on' Wednesday afternoon she had 12,475. cases* on board.
