An: allegation :of- a 'serious, nature by John .■Williaml' Moynihan, a military trainee,; against' John Shiel, a cook employed at Trenthain Camp:during the December1 -.training, course, was j the subject ■of a slander action- commenced -■-,at the Magistrate's Court yesterday before 'Mr. J. Miller, SMI .Shiel claimed £3(50 as' damages from Moynihan. - It was alleged in the, statement .".of claim "that the 'defendant iad -ifalsqly -arid maliciously'cciiveyed to the':camp ; authorities a: charge against the plaintiff: of a- certain:serious offence- with the result that the plaintiff had lost his position as cook. ■■ :'- Outlining the case for the plaintiff, Mr. B. '0. ; Cahill said that' Shiel would - Way that on December 9, he was called to the orderly' room and notified by Colonel Symon that; a chargehad been, laid against him by. Moynihan alleging an indecent >asSault.' Colonel Symon apparently took the view- that the, matter was one that • should; be settled outride,; and , took the actrou:bi dismissing him from his.employ-"m,e?t-.i_A,s a result o£ the allegations, the plaintiff ,had ,not: since been. employed by the military- authorities. Counsel understood, "however,- that: subject ,to the clearing up' of this matter,:.he would be again m.a. position to get employment as a camp .cook.
