THE SIMPER FAMILY
PAIR FROM SOUTHLAND
The Invercargill owner, Mr. W. T. Hazlett, is usually represented at Wellington meetings, and two of his horses, Ruling Light and Shining Gold, completed their journey north yesterday in charge of their trainer, I<\ J. McKay. The fornierespecially is expected to give a good account of herself at the meeting. Ruling Light is the latest of Simper's progeny to race, being a now four-year-old bay filly by Chief Ruler, and she possesses a lot of the same brilliance as was shown by her illustrious half-relatives—Affecta-tion, Gold Light, Razzle Dazzle, Beacon Light, etc. Last season she won five races, and this term, after being slow in recovering 'form, she scored again at the Southland Meeting last week at her. most recent start, beating a useful field under 8.3 in the open sprint. It will be remembered that she was brought north for the Wellington Summer Meeting last year, but, backed down to favouritism in the Apprentices' Plate, failed after getting away slowly. Shining Gold is another member of the Rame family, being a four-year-old son of Simper's daughter, Gold Light. He is a chestnut gelding by Arausio, and his racing record to date does not give much indication as to his possibilities, as in seven starts he has not yet been in a place. As a two-yeav-old he was sent across to a Sydney stable, and he started five times in Australia, but not doing well there, he was returned at the end of the season. He bad only one start here last season, and this term he made his reappearance at Wyndliam last week, carrying little support and not showing up in the running. He does not come in till the second day at next week's meeting.
