UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
INSTALMENT DUE IN. AUGUST
CHARGE ON INCOME ALSO PAYABLE.
On Monday, Ist August, an- instalment of the general unemployment levy will become due, the amount for; those who pay quarterly being five .hillings. Those persons "who become liable for payment for tho first time are remind■ed that they may pay quarterly,, or the whole sum (20s) may .be paid in adThe second instalment of tho emergency unemployment charge at tho rate of Is in tho £ (one penny in every ono Shilling and oightpence, or part thereof) on income other ..than salary r or wages will also fall due on Ist August. Tho official receipt issued when payment of tho May instalment was effected must bo produced when paying tho second instalment. In connection with this charge there" appears to be some misapprehension as to the liability ot overseas income, and it is necessary to I explain that income derived elsewhere than from New Zealand is subject, to the charge unless it can be'proved to the satisfaction of the Unemployment, Board that it < has been chargeable in some other country within the British, Dominions with a special' tax levied in i respoct of unemployment. As far- as is known, New South Wales is the only place within the British Dominions to impose an unemployment tax on dividends paid to non-resident shareholders. The position will, in the majority of cases, bo apparent fsom the dividend warrants received, as the deduction is nsually shown thereon; this evidence would be satisfactory proof that the income is exempt in New Zealand. Where only a percentage, as representing that proportion of the dividend earned within New South Wales, has been subjected to the unemployment tax, only that proportion is exempt from the emergejajffi fibajg* is J£«K geaiami,"
