CHEAP WHEAT
DOMINION'S PURCHASE
WHAT SYDNEY THINKS
(Eeceived 22nd July, 11 a,m:)
SYDNEY, This Day.
City grain circles are much interested in the New Zealand 'controversy regarding wheat purchased in Australia for" the Dominion.
It is pointed out here, in reply to Mr. Jackson's comments, that the price paid Victoria and South Australia; averaging 3s 33d a bushel, f.0.b., was distinctly less than the prico for which wheat could havo been bought from Sydney at that time. And, bearing in mind that tho inquiry was for quality superior to f.a.q. of any State, it is futile to claim that wheat of that quality could' have been bought for 2s lOd or 2s lid from Australia.
.Merchants say. that at no time, recently 'has the market price at Sydney for I.a.q. bagged wheat been less than about 3s 4id f.o.b. Indeed, at the timo tho New Zealand inquiry was made here, wheat was selling on a basis* of 3s sjd on the rails, Sydney, equal to 3a 6Jd f.o.b.
