Arrested in Moxhani avenue' on Thursday evening after his car had collided with a motor-lorry, smashed the gates of the Kilbirnie Police Station, and finally come to a stop-in a'hedge on the opposite side of the road. : Wilfred Eainsford Homersham, a traveller, aged 37, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day and was fined £20 for being found jntosjcated in charge of a motor""iv Hls"liceoce was not suspended. ; A"er * Plea of guilty had been entered to the charge, Senior-Sergeant Scott said that-about.s.3oii.m. on Thursday the accused was driving along Mosham avenue in a southerly direction at- a speed eatitt ivJ J witne, sses a* 35 miles pev hour. He collided with a motor-lorry parked on the left-hand" side of the road, swerved across the road,-,and smashed into the gates of the-Kilbirnie Police-Station. The car then' went backwards for a distance ot about 15 yards and crashed into a hedge on the other side of the road. Sergeant, Duke, who was in the Police Station, saw the accused immediately after the accident and found that ho was well under, the influence of liquor. ..Counsel for Homersham said-he *as instructed v that .the defendant had .been dnving a car for over eight years and had never previously an accident, nor ever had a conviction against him for' any a enf e- The MpMent, said counsel, was due to-the, combined circumstance of the defendant's state of' insobriety coupled with the fact that .there was a defect in the steering gear of the o.ir. The defendant stated that he had had about three glasses-of f beer during the afternoon pnor.to the accident, but on an empty stomach. In addition to the damage to the car, which, under' the circumstances, would not be met by the insurance company, the defendant .had incurred medical expenses and had damaged the Police Station gate to the extent of £4 or £5 in asking that the1 defendant's licorice slioultt not be cancelled, counsel said that t Homersham was a- married man and had been in the same employment for the past 23 years.- If he Was to retain his position it was essential that he should be 1 able to drive a ear.
