RACE ARRANGEMENTS

OFFICIALS APPOINTED

Officials to control the Cornwell Cup racing were appointed as follows at a meeting o£ the Domiuion Conference on Saturday evening: Judges, Messrs. J. j\lo£i'at (representing Ckrislchureh), A. Stirling (Porirua); measurers, Messrs. Motfat, J. T. Hobbs (Lyttelton); time-keeper, Mr. W. H. : (Wellington); starter, Mr. B. J. L. Jukes (Wellington); deputy-starter, Mr. J. W. Rawlinson (Manjjkau). Mr. J. Mackay (Auckland) was elected chairman of the conference, and Mr. E. J. Wilson. (Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association) was appointed secretary. It was decided to hold two races each day until some progress was made, all races to be in Kvaus Bay except one, which would be sailed at Petone. The morning race was fixed for 10 o'clock each day, and the afternoon race for 3 o'clock. The question of whether the crews should be allowed choice o£ sails in the contest was discussed, and it was decided that each crew should carry one set of sails throughout the contest unless special permission of the Sailing Committee is obtained. The Harbour Board's launch Uta will take visitors from the Patent Slip Wharf and will follow each race. The measuring of boats and sails was carried out yesterday morning. Mr. Mackay, who is an authority on the Takapuiia class, having trained the cup winners on six occasions, remarked that the boats were the most even and the best equipped he had seen at any contest. Following the usual practice, the visiting crews had the winds and tides likely to be experienced in Evans Bay explained to them by Mr. A. Johnston, skipper oC the Betty. Mr. O. A. Moller, chairman of the local association, stressed the advantages of one-design class racing, and Mr. Mackay gave an address on the sailing -of Takapuna boats. Free tickets have been made available to the visitors for the principal picture theatres, MOTOR OUTING. Yesterday the visitors were taken for a motor outing arranged by the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, in conjunction with the Pliinmerton, Paremata, and Heretaunga Clubs. A number of cars with a party of about 60 left the Evans Bay Clubhouse at 10 a.m. for Plimmerton, where, after an inspection of the local club's premises and fleet, luncheon was provided. The boys and delegates were welcomed by the commodore, Mr. Mildenhall, who said that the Cornwell Cup contest was perhaps a better contest than that for the Sanders Cup in that it trained the young boys to participate in the cleanest of sports in the cleanest of ways. Mr. Moller thanked the club on behalf of the association for its hospitality. After lunch a visit was paid to Paremata, where an impromptu sports programme was carried out, and afternoon tea was provided. The races resulted as follows:— Scratch race for Cornwell Cup crews: Hendry 1, Campbell 2. Spinnaker hands' race: Priddy 1, Campbell 2. Skippers', race: Johnston 1, Tissman 2. Crews' relay race: Lyttelton 1. Delegates' race: J. Mackay 1, J. T. Hobbs 2. Wheelbarrow race: Lyttelton. Consolation race: Campbell 1, Pickering Mr. F. L. Bradey, president of the Paremata Club, was assisted in the entertainment of the visitors by the commodore, Mr. A. Stirling, and the club handicapper, Mr. A. J. Shearer. The return journey was made over the Moonshine road and clown the'Hult Valley, and a- brief visit was paid to the Heretaunga Boating -Club, Petone, where tea was served, the commodore, Mr. G. Hook, receiving the party. Mr. Moller again replied, and other speakers were Messrs. J. Mackay (Auckland), J. T. Hobbs (Lyttelton), and W. A. Johnston, who, as a parent of one of the Auckland boys, said that the contests tended to break down parochialism. ■ s CREWS AND DELEGATES. Auckland has won sis of the seven contests sailed to dato, tho only other wiaggoing to Canterbury in 1926. On tha^ occasion the skipper of the Qiu™rbnry crew was G. Brassell, who sailed the .<fi.venger to success in the recent Sanffers Cup contest. The following are the delegates: Mrxi.. Mackay (Auckland); Mr. J. W. Eawlinson (Manukau); Mr. A. Stirling (Paremata); Mr. H. E. Evans (Plimmerton); Mr. O. A. Moller (Wellington);:. Mr. T. Glanville (Cliristehurch); Mr. J. T. Hobbs (Lyttelton); Mr. H. C. Brown (Otago). The cup goes to the crew who aro first to win three races. Several remits will como before the Dominion Conference. One from the Takapuiia Boating Club proposes to alter the rule regarding the date of tho contest,.so that it shall be held during tho last two weeks in January, "unless for some good and sound reason, when it may be held early in February." This, it is stated, is to safeguard schoolboys as much as possible. Another Takapuna remit deals with the- definition of the word "port," and it is proposed by the Otago Yacht ana Motorboat Association that each competing crew shall bring its own boat and sail in it for the first race before tbo present system of drawing for boats is brought into operation.
