The statement made by the Minister of Defence (tho Hon. J. G. Cobbe) that there should be fewer members, of Parliament and an • in<yeaso in the; representation of country districts was vigorously contested \by Mr. W. E. Parry (Labour, Auckland' Central) in the House of yesterday. .
Mr. Parry said that the country quota was already 28 per cent., above that of the towns; and that* the Minister's statement savpured of taxation without representation. The Minister had not served as a rank and file member of the House, but immediately after, his election had been elevated ,to '■ Cabinet rank. If he had served as an ordinary member somo notice could have been taken of his arguments,- but he did not know the difficulties that the private member had to contend with.
A member: "He was reared on grass.''
Mr. Parry said it was not for a new member of the House to pass'comiaents of that nature, because he was not familiar with the position.
