HEAVY SNOWFALL
THE MIDLAND RAILWAY
DRIFTS AT ARTHUR'S PASS

The heaviest snowfall for eighteen, years covered Arthur's Pass to-a depth of over two feet this morning, with drifts up to six feet. The fall continued, heavily overnight.
Traffic delays of four hours were caused, but now the trains are moving fairly well on the Midland line, despite the fact that the automatic signalling apparatus is out of action. Gangs of men arc clearing tho lines. . At Springfield the depth of snow is eighteen inches. The telegraph and telephone lines to the West Coast arc interrupted on both sifles of Arthur's Pass, and it is also impossible, to get in touch with Oxford, Waiau, and Kaikoura,
