AN ALTERNATIVE.
The suggestion that sustenance would have to be paid to those for whom work could not be found was made by Mr. C. H. Clinkard (United, Rotorua) in tho House of Representatives last night.
When Mr. Clinkard sat down, the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr. H. E. Holland) remarked that he wondered whether the Government would thank the member for Rotorua for replying on their behalf. Mr. Holland said that Mr. Clinkard's speech reminded him of the story of a clergyman who had made a statement against the authorities of his church, and the question arose as to whether they would charge him with heresy or make him a bishop.
Mr. Clinkard: "Make him a bishop.?'
Mr. Holland: "I wonder if they will make the honourable gentleman, a Minister of the Crown."
