PEWA VERY EASILY

SOMEWHAT OVERDUE SUCCESS

Pewa, well placed throughout, came bway at the finish of the Novice Stakes, fend, won with a lot in hand. He -is a well-bred three-year-old bay gelding, by iArausio from the Demosthenes mare Parearan, and on several occasions during the past three months has been near losing his maiden status. He carries the F. Ormond colours, being trained at GreenmeadoH: by W. M'Kinnon, and he gave A. E. Ellis a win in his first ride at the Jneeting. Black Duchess, Pewa, Hinewai, Baskier, and Tar Baby were the first to show out, but Hinewai was soon up ahead of Pewa, and Viaduct and Laconic improved their positions quickly. Hinewai and Viaduct were first into the straight from Pewa and Laconic, with Baskier and Black Duchess "at the head of the others; but Pewa ran ■up to_ the leaders in a few strides, and, watching them carefully, drew away over the last furlong to beat Hinewai by two Jengthq Tfltonie was another length .•Met Ihlrd, and Baskier, Chief Savage, iTiaduct, Tar Baby, and Black Duchess rvere next. Pewa was more than twice as well supported as Viaduct, a five-year-old bay gelding by Tonbridge from Lugano, and a stablemate o£ Tar Baby. There were somewhat smaller followings for Beverage,. Tar Baby, and Baskier. Hinewai paid yearly twice as much for second as _ the pinner. Viaduct, who had had little

racing, should improve, for he failed only over the final piece. Beverage was agaiu disappointing, and so was Tar Baby. Black Duchess made a bold showing, and Chief Savage, a foiir-year-old chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler from' a Sigaor mare, finished in a manner to suggest that he will be taking a part in a decision before iong. Hinewai and Laconic are the two likeliest of the beaten horses to leave maideu ranks at an early date. Laconic was a Jittlc unlucky in the running.
