TWO BIG DIVIDENDS

WELL-BRED NURSERY WINNERS

The Oroua Nursery Handicap provided a real turnup, the first and secoud horses, Hampden and Furlong, being very little fancied, and, returning substantial dividends. . Furlong paid well over a quarter of a century for second, and Hampden paid nearly half as, much for first, a surprising price for one of H. Gray's mounts. ;■.-... ~■ '. - t Interlocutor,. Korokio, Furlong, Hampden, and. Haulbowline had the best o£ a ragged 6tart, but Korokio ran wide on the turn, and carried' Haulbowline out with heW Interlocutor led Hampden, Furlong, Brittany, Korokio, and Haulbowline into the; straight, but quickly succumbed , to Hampden, who, under punishment, responded to hold oft' a strong challenge from Furlong by a length. Sailing finished fast into third place a length and a half'farther away, and was followed home by Drama, Interlocutor, St. Roger, Korokio, and Black Songster.' Korokio and Haulbowline were much the best, supported. The former did not appear to. be - able to manage the bends, and ruined Haulbowlirie's chance by carrying him out with her. Teller, the third favourite, lost all hope of success at the .start, and so did Gallant Fox and several of the others. Gallant Fox was very badly left. Hampden is a' bay colt by Tea Tray from .the. Kilbroney mare Kilcalm, dam also of Shipshape and Te Awhina. Kilcalm was the-first-of the progeny of Esther, a well-bred mare, by Santry from Persepolis, by Persimmon, imported to the Dominion from England in 1915 by Mr. J. B. Reid. Hampden is owned by Mr. F. Bristol, of Wangahui, who paid 140 guineas for him at the last Trentham sales, and is a member of O. Cox's team at Hawera. The race was only his second. Furlong is a bay filly by Acre from the Absurd mare Ohui, full-sister to Tamatete, Tukia, and Freehold. She is owned by her breeder, Mr. W. MA. Duncan, and is trained at Fordell by L. G. Morris. The race was her first, and the manner in which-., she finished suggests that she will hold her own with the best fillies of the year.
