GREAT LOGAN'S MILE

AN EASY VICTOR IN THE &PRINT

Great Logan went a fast mile in the Sprinters' Handicap, which he won rather easily. The big pacer lias been raced over all distances, but he is much better as a sprinter than as a stayer. Avonwood, who is trained at New Brighton by his owner (W. P. M. Kerr), has been gradually working himself into the best company over sprint courses. In this race he was quickly away and paced in the lead until headed by Great Logan half a furlong from home. Avonwood is equally good in saddle or harness in short-distance races. After finishing third in a fast mile and a quarter on the opening day, consistent Bonny Logan came out; in this race and occupied the same position. There are few more consistent performers over short courses than Fred Holmes's favourite, who has been racing for a number of seasons, but still maintains her brilliancy. Native Prince showed up prominently about t\vo furlongs from home, but faded out again in the straight. Nelson Tasker was one of the. fancied candidates for the

race, but he failed to begin smartly, and at no stage of the journey was he in the picture.
