MB. TEOTJP AND THE MAYORALTY

"MUST TAKE A SPELL"

The Mayor, Mr. G. A, Troup, stated to-day that he had decided not to offer himself as a candidate for tho Mayoralty on the expiration of his present term in April next, when ho will have completed four j'ears in office, and six years as a member of the council. A few months ago Mr. Troup suffered an annoying bout of rheumatism, and was advised by his doctor to take a sea trip. This he did, going to Vancouver by the Aorangi and " coming back on her return trip. The five weeks' spell greatly benefited him, but recently the rheumatism has returned. "I feel that I must take a spell, for five or six months at least," said Mr. Troup, "and therefore I will not be a candidate for the Mayoralty next May.'.' This definite announcement will probably speed up tho consideration by the Civic League, the recently-formed Ratepayers' Association, and possiblyother interests,, of possible candidates, for there arenas has been more than once previously evidenced, advantages ,111 being first in. If Mr. Troup had been contesting the seat again it is likely enough that no third candidate would have come forward and Mr. Troup and a Labour candidate, yet to be announced, would have made a straightout, campaign of it. A triangular contest is now, however, not at all improbable, as under these new circumstances there are probably half a dozen possible nominees, several of them members of tho present City Council.
