HUTT RIVER BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last evening. Present: Mr. F. S. Hewer (chairman), and Messrs. C. A. Chapman, J. Mitchell, and C. Gostelow. The board approved the sale of a piece of land behind the Bell Estate in High street to the executors of the estate for £300. It was decided to obtain an opinion as to the board's powers to compel land-owners to fence to protect growing willows on the riverbank from stock. The Engineer (Mr. H. Sladden) reported that he was at work on the data required to enable the board to come to a decision in regard to a lease of Scabey Island to the Aero Club. At the request of the Maoris interested in the Maori Cemetery at the mouth of the river, it was decided to expend immediately £35 in material and £15 in wages towards the promised subsidy oi £150 for a fence round the cemetery, instead of awaiting the completion of the.work to pay over the whole amount. The Engineer reported that the absence, of floods was allowing too much growth .on portions it was desired to scour away. Generally the river was in a veiy satisfactory condition. Carters had been warned against removing shingle from the bank opposite the Belmont plant.
