Tho newly-formed' Karori Musical Society is > making- good headway. At a recent meeting the conductor said that the society was'to be congratulated on its successful inaugration. Three, sections, were'-'definitely^ formed —vocal, orchestral, and dramatic The society Was fortunate in having a fair number of professional and experienced amateurs in each section. . The voices were of good quality and. capable of doinggood work. The ' orchestra ■ had had three rehearsals to date, the players being very keen. A couple more instruments were, required in.the brass section; and a. flute and a couple in the strings, and another double bass player would Satisfy the requirements of the society. . ■ . ..■■-. v .-■ The dramatic ' section is ■ well under way, and will begin rehearsals very soon. The society.is growing rapidly. Performers must be of reasonablo ability to carr.V.out their work, and only such-membors will be-admittodas playing members. > : .'.'':■■'. - . -, Several residents of the district have offered contributions for the purchase of music, which; is. __urgently heeded. There is, every indication, that the society, will be quite., a, big affair. The services of Mrs. N. B. Rowe,, a successful organiser of. concerts, have been obtained, as secretary. . ...- , :. .. .
It was decided to put on a concert in December-^Wallace's opera, "Maritana." . Vocal gems would be given with the orchestra. The dramatic section will produce a drama or comedy, and various solos and orchestral items Will complete the programme. • The organisers, Messrs. B. Scholtz, S. Jackson, Stevens, and Arthur. Johnston (musical director), were given a vote. of thanks, and congratulated on their successful organising. The chairman (Mr. Slovens) said the only thing needed was for Karori people to support an organisation which was; really their own, and probably the first serious attempt to give the district what it really needed. The question of honorary members was deferred.
