THE WELLINGTON LEAGUE

The eighth annual general meeting of the Wellington Chess League was held on Wednesday afternoon in the chess room of. the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute, Mr. F. J. Brooker (vice-president) occupying the chair. The following were also present:—Messrs. S. Faulknor, A. T. Craven, J. A. Glasgow (hon. treasurer), F. K. Kelling, H.M. Rosenberg, H. Topp, J. H. Turvey, R. A.Godtschalk, R. Battersby, and J. L. Hardy (hon. secretary). The.eighth annual : report recorded the ; double success of the Ngaio Chess Club, which won both, the senior and junior teams' tourneys, and also tenders congratulations to Mr. A. W» Gyles on winning the champion of champions contest for the fifth year in succession—a fine record. Trophies have beeii procured for each of these competitions, shields having been provided for both the teams' contests and a cup for the champion of champions event. The balancesheet presented by Mr. Glasgow shows the league to be in a sound position, there being a small credit balance after paying for the three newly-acquired trophies. The report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously, tributes being paid to the valued work of the executive officers. Tha election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, His Worship the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup; president, Mr. W. Mackay; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. Faulknor, F. X, Kelling, A. D. Pickard (Wellington Working Men's Club), W. Berry (Wellington South Chess Club), F. J. Brookev (Ngaio Chess Club), A. J. George (Wadestown Chess Club),.A. W. Gyles (Karon Chess Club), and' G. Wigham (Hutt Valley Chess Club); hon. secretary, Mr. J. L. Hardy; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. A. Glasgow; hon. reporter, Mr. F. K. Kelling; hon,auditor, Mr. A. W. Gyles; permit committee, Messrs. W. Mackay and P. ,T. Brooker. On the motion of Mr. Glasgow, it was decided that in order to save tim» at the annual North v. South match, on!/ league prizes should. be presented at this fixture in future. Entries for the current season's competitions are to close on the 23rd instant. The following entries_ have already been received for the champion of champions contest:—J. Lindsay (W.M» Club), S. Faulknor (Ngaio C.C.), K. An» drews (Port Nicholson C.C.). and P. X* Kelling (Wellington C.C.). Messrs. F. «T, Brooker and S. Faulknor (the founder of the league) were appointed a sub-commit* tee to revise the rules. References wei« made to the splendid work done for chess in this Dominion by the late Mr. C. W, Tanner during the many years that he waif hon. secretary of the New Zealand Cheat Association. A motion of sympathy wal passed,to his relatives, members standing in silence. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to last-year's officebearers, and a similar tribute to the Working Men's Club for its kindness in ;placingr ; its chess room at the league's disposal foiquarterly and annual meetings. ■■•".■.
