OBITUARY

MR.' C. W. TANNER

The death occurred early this morning, at his. residence, 10, Boston terrace, of Mr. Cyril William Tanner, at..the age oil 69. The late Mr. Tanner was born in Wellington, and was educated at Christ's College, Christehureh. Ho was articled to Messrs. M'Donald and Bussell, solicitors, Invercargill, in 18S0, being admitted a barrister and solicitor in the same year. He came to Wellington in ISSB. At one thno in partnership with Mr. Hiaulmarsh, he later took over the business, and had offices in Lambton quay. Of late' years he. was retired. The late Mr. Tanner unsuccessfully contested the AVairarapa scat some years ago, and also, on the death of Mr. k■ Fletcher, the Wellington. Central'scat, Ho was formerly a member of the To Aro School Committee. He was greatly interested in the Early Settlers'_ Association, of the committee of, which he was a member',- and was at.one time an active - member of the Shakespeare Society. Interested in tho Volunteer' movement, the late Mr. Tanner started as an artillery cadet in Invereargill, and ultimately became' a lieutenant of artillery. Ho took part in many social activities in Wellington, was a member of Waterloo Lodge .of the .Masonic fraternity, a rid. was an ex-member of the Court Sir George Grey, A.O.F. He was keenly interested in sports and aquatics for many years. He .was a Wellington' city councillor. Averse to politics being introduced at thp council table, in the days of the ward system, ho objected to the various representatives competing against each other for their districts, "".considering that they should rather endeavour to serve the city as a whole. Boon after his arrival in .Wellington lie: became prominent in chess circles, and was; the winner of tho first tourney for the 'Peth'erick No. 1 trophy, donated by the late Mr. E. W. Pethcrick, and later won outright by the late' Mr. B, ?. Barnes. In later years he dropped;out of tourney play, but was a: tower ,of strength to the Wellington team, in its telegraphic matches with other centres. His'style of play was admirably adapted to this form of contest, in;which he put up a fine record of wins. and draws. His name became a household word both here and in Australia, through tho ex. eellent services rendered as honorary secretary of the New Zealand Chess Association for moid than a decade. A stroke in July last compelled his I'otirement from executive chess work, and the many expressions of sympathy then received were testimonies to his successful work ill this direction. In 1889 lie married Miss Ann Kebbcll, daughter of the late Dr. Kobbell, Wellington, wlio predeceased ,him. He leaves two daughters —Mrs. G. Laird,, of Scotland, and Miss D. Tanner, 'of. Wellington.
