A GARDENS TRAGEDY

POND OF DEAD FISH

(From "The Post's" Representative.) NELSON, 15th November. It was reported at tho fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council that during the month of October nine permits wore issued for new dwellings, valued at £7166, and one for new business premises valued at £1250. A number of repair permits were also issued, involving a total amount of £9745. The Nelson City electric light'returns continue to show an increase. Last mouth 113,555 units were sold, compared with 103,541 for the corresponding period oi'.lfiot year, an increase of 10,014; while the revenuo increased by £179 17s 9d, the figures being £2183 12s lid for last month, against £2003 15s 2d for October, 1928. . All the fish in the main fountain pond at the Queen's Gardens were found dead this morning. A number of napthalene balls were found in the pond and it is thought that these caused the fish to die. Fish in another fountain pond and in the lake were not affected. At the Magistrate's Court this morning Mr. T. E. Maunsell heard objections to the proposed closing of Ngahtama street. Three residents forwarded cases of ' hardship in having to travel an extra half-mile'in going to and from work. The Magistrate reserved his decision. ' Anthony Shannon, an elderly man with several aliases, was brought before Mr. Maunsell, charged with being an incorrigible rogue and with drunkenness. Th(j accused pleaded guilty to both charges. It was stated by the police that Shannon was found lying in mud near the railway station, and that he was addicted to methylated spirits. On the first charge Shannon was sentenced to three months' imprisonment; on the second he was convicted and discharged, j • The Nelson Horticultural Society's annual rose show was held to-day in the Drill Hall.
