FIELD-MARSHAL'S SYMPATHY
The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, has received the following cablegram from Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood, Commander-in-Chief of the Military Forces in India: _ ''I have been greatly distressed to hear of the severe earthquake recently experienced in the South Island. I shall be grateful if you will express my deepest sympathy to all concerned. —(Signed) Birdwood, Field-Marshal."
