SUN SPOTS
LARGE GROUP SEEN
During the past few .days two large sun-spot groups have teen'tinder observation at Kelburn Observatory, iepbrts Mr. J. L. Thomson, director of the solar section :of .'the, New. Zoaland Astronomical Society../ The larger group, which was on :the .central meridian of the sun yesterday,-has a great leading spot, the penumbra of ■.which: ia over' 43,000 miles in diameter." Within the penumbra yesterday ; the umbra had divided into seyen regions.- This morning it is reported' that forty-one spots wore observed on-the -whole solar disc. An aurora is said to have been seen by. some people on Sunday morning; and the sky during the past feW nights haa certainly had an auroral tinge., The recent earthquake must not be regarded 1 as the effect of the sun-spots, and is most likely a coincidence".. .',['.'. ,i. •,,
