DEFENCE POLICY

ACTION BY GOVERNMENT

CONFERENCE BEING HELD

Important questions affecting the defence policy of the Dominion are being considered at a conference of representatives of branches of the defence forces of New Zealand, being held at Parliament Buildings to-day. The conference has been called by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. T. M. .Wilford), who informed a "Post" representative that matters pertaining to the military, naval, and air forces of the Dominion would be considered. It was not expected that the conference would conclude to-day.

Thoso present at the conference were the Minister, the General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces (Major-General K. Young, C.8., C.M.G., D.S'.O., N.Z.5.0.), tlio Chief of the General Staff (Brigadier W. H. L. Sinclair-Burgess, C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., N.Z.S.C.), the Quartermaster-General (Colonel H. E. Pilkington, C.8.E., R.N.Z.A.), the Director of Artillery (Colonel F. Syinon, C.M.G., D.5.0., E.N.Z.A., A.D.C.), Brigadier H. E. Potter, C.M.G., N.Z.S.C. (Northern Command), Brigadier J. H. Whyte, D.5.0., D.C.M., N.Z.S.C. (Central Command), Brigadier M. M. Gardner, D.5.0., E.N.Z.A., A.D.C. (Southern Command), the Director of Air Services (Major T. M. "Wilkes, M.C., N.Z.P.A.F.), Major L. M. Isitt, N.Z.P.A.F., Captain J. L. Findlay, M.C., N.Z.P.A.F., the Commodore of the New Zealand Division of the Eoyal Navy (Commodore G. T. C. P. Swabey, E.N.), -and Captain C. N. Eeyne, A.D.C, B.N. In the policy issued to the electors prior to the election, tlie United Party laid it clown that New Zealand should honour its moral obligations to the Motherland by co-operation as far as possible in the matter of Imperial naval and aerial defence. A policy of cooperation with local bodies to provide aviation at somo main centres by which commercial aviation could be developed and co-ordinated with defence in times of national emergency would bo carried out.
