PARAMOUNT THEATRE.

"Hoses of Picardy," a story of the Great War, now being screened at the Paramount Theatre, makes a powerful appeal to British sentiment, and for that reason alone, apart from the merits of tho picture, is sure to prove a great attraction. ' In 1926 Lieutenant Skene (John Stuart) stands in the market place of tho little village of Houdebecii dreaming of tho past. A charabanc laden with 'sight-seeing tourists paused while tho guide remarked that tho British occupied tho place from 1914 to 1918, and' nothing of importance happened there. Skene's mind goes back to the past, and his recollections arc screened. Ho thinks of the farm when he, a raw young officer yet to .receive his baptism of fire, was billeted there" with his plaloon. Madelaine, a French girl (Lillian Hall-Davis) asks him for news of a French cavalry officer, her "b'on ami." War scenes follow,: and Lieutenant Skenc is shown returning to the village with broken health and jangled nerves. The cnciny"s flnal effort and tho advancu of tho British Army are well depicted. Tlio story has a wonderful climax, which in itself is worth seeing. John Stuart, as the young British officer, takes tho part with remarkable fidelity and power, and emphasises n note in the history of tho struggle which Is perhaps not sufficiently recalled, namely, "there arc some who will never forget." Tho supporting pro-gramme-includes a Gaumont Graphic and a comedy. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. It. It. Caulton, gives a fine rendering of the air "Koses of Picardy" (Wood) and "Beautiful Galatea" (Suppe), as well as bright incidental music.
