APPRECIATIVE

The death at Wellington of Mr. J. D. Climie, father of Mr. P. K. Climic, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, caused the latter to leave Christehurch at the height of the arrangements for the reception of the Southern Cross, which arrangements it had been his duty to prepare. Fortunately, Mr. Climie had just time to see the trans-Tasman airplane arrive. Following him to Wellington came this appreciative telegram from the aviators: — "Wo offer our sincere condolences on the bereavement caused by the death of your father, and appreciate complete arrangements made on our behalf.— Kingsford Smith, Ulm, Litchfield, M'Williams." This is one more indication of the visitors' approciativeness of efforts made on their behalf, and their tactful recognition of same. Mr. Climio will return on Saturday evening to Christchurch, where he will resume his organising function in connection with the ontertainment of the visitors during the balance of their time in Canterbury and at the send-off about 30th September. The following telegram has boon received by General Russell from the airmen, who were greeted by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association; —"Sincere thanks for your congratulatory telegram. Will arrive Wellington Saturday morning, and will then arrange time to attend any Digger functions. Greetings from Australian Diggers. —(Signed) Kingsford Smith and Ulm."
