SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
DEPARTMENT AS EDUCATOR An exhaustive resume of the work of the newly^established Department of Scientific and Industrial Research during the past year is contained in the annual report of the Department, presented in the Houso of Representatives ycterday. The report states.that in general the policy of tho Department has been to endeavour to prove to particular industries that research work is worth while, and that co-operation in that regard is a practical proposition. In the case of industries of national concern, tho Department had aimed to encourago such effort by making grants to supplement moneys raised for tho. purpose. Tho Department's policy, says the report, is that as far as possible industries should be encouraged to organise and conduct their own'researches in a comprehensive way and ultimately do this at their own expense. Further, the Department aims to induce the development of a practical scientific attitude of mind amongst those connected with the primary and secondary industries. It is realised that this is not possible of immediate attainment, but that there is need for the Department to play the role of educator to a certain extent, to render tho financial assistance necessary to place the scientific equipment of industry on a sound basis, arid to endeavour to point out the possibilities that lie ahead. Research organisations have been established in connection with the dairy, wheat, moat, seed and plant, ilax, mineral content of pastures, cool storage, noxious weeds control, pig, pork, and bacon, wool, leather, and fuel questions.
