THE TASMAN FEIG-HT TAHUNANUI TOWN BOARD (From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 11th September. Like the rest of New Zealand, Nelson was thrilled this morning sit the good news of the saj'e arrival of the Southern Cross. Many people had spent the night at their wireless sots receiving the progress reports of the flight. Messrs. Wilkins and Field had a loud speaker erected outside their shop in Hardy street, and as goon as the news of the departure got round a crowd begun to collect and the reports were made available all night, iib was a|go the arrival in the morning. The many friends of Mr. W. Douglas, of Stoke, were shocked tins morning to hear of his sudden death last evening. Mr. Douglas had.' been feeling unwell tor the past few days, but nothing serious was anticipated. Leaving England in ISSS, Mr. Douglas resided at Richmond till ISOO, when he took up his residence at "Greenhills," Stoke, where he endeared himsclt to a large circle ot' friends by his genial and hospitable nature. Mrs. Douglas predeceased her husband three years ago, anil they are survived by one daughter only, Mrs. M. Grace, of Blenheim. Nominations for the Tahunanui Town Board closed yesterday for the election on 19th September. There arc seven scute to be filled and the nominations number ten. The retiring members are seeking re-election, with tho exception of Mr. C. II Chamberlain. The new candidates are F A. Bamford, C. I. L. Bell, Geo. Cunningham, and \. Stewart, The retiring mem bcrs seeking re-election are: W. Carter, J. T. 0. Day, F. W. Greenslade (chairman), F. Ilobern, L. Ingham, and M. O'Sullivan. Under the auspices of the Nelson Philo-. sophical Society Professor Easterlicld is to deliver a lecture to-morrow evening on the very interesting subject of "The Pakihi Lands Problem." The lecture will be illustrated by lantern slides. At last night's meeting of the Acclimatisation Society the secretary, Mr. W. Andrews, complained very strongly of the practice of people sending shags' heads through the post for the royalty which the society pays. They very often arrived in a disgusting state of decomposition, he said, and he announced that in future he would not pay out on heads so arriving. ■ Jlotueka is.getting ready for the coming cricket season. At the annual meeting of the Motueka Cricket Association, a representative body of officers was elected, with Mr. E. Trevena as president. Last year's cup winners were:—Senior, Eiwaka; junior, Whakarewa; Hughes Cup, Motueka. . . . , The Nelson Rugby Lmon last night appointed Mr. Edwards manager of the senior representatives, who leave tor Wellington on Thursday evening to play Wellington on Saturday. A third-class representative team is travelling to Motueka to play a match there, on Saturday.
