DIAMONDS 3, PETONE 2.

Diamonds defeated Petone on the No. 1 ground at the Basin Reserve by 3 goals to 2, in a game which was bright and open, and which provided the spectators with a good exhibition of the code. The teams were:— r ,- ','? ■■•>■;.. , : ■ Diamonds.—Ewing, "G.. ■ Wofiherspoon, Guest, Findlay,;.T.' Wothcrspooiv. M'Cormack, M'Leod,'Daniclls; Anton, Smith, Stark. Petone.—M'Vean, Steele, Haines, Forquhar, Campbell, Irvine, James, Stabbs, Leslie, Cameron, Hamilton. The opening stages of the match did not produce anything in the nature of interesting play. Each side pressed in turn, but little advantage was gained. A misskick on the part of one of the Eetone backs gave M'Leod an opportunity, but his shot, which was taken from close up, went over the bar. M'Leod received from Anton, but his shot again failed to reach the mark. Petone pressed, and Guest put in some nice work defending. After a period or even play, T. Wother:spoon tried a shot at goal from close up, and the leather hit the cross-bar. Petone made a determined attack, and a shot from the wing almost reached its mark. Diamonds retaliated, and an attempt by T. Wotherspoon was nearly successful, the ball hitting the . upright. Petone again attacked, and Leslie, who shot from close quarters, sent the ball just to the side of the net. Pdtone maintained the pressure and S-tabbs, who tried a long shot, dropped the ball on,to the cross-bar. A shot from. Hamilton missed the net by inches. A close game was maintained for the remainder of the first spell, which ended without a score being registered. In the second half Petone wer^ the first to score. Leslie broke through the Diamond defence and dribbled the ball up close to the net. He scored with a shot • ' -that gave Ewing no chance. Diamonds equalised in a few minutes, Smith headiug in a centre received from M'Leod. 1-1. The game became more open, and . excitement was high when Petone again scored, Cameron finding the net with. a pass he received from James, , Petone 2, Diamonds 1. Diamonds made a determined attack, and again equalised when Anton scored from close up. 2-2. The winning goal was a fine piece of work by Ji'Leon, who after running nearly the length of the field centred. Smith shot, and M'Vean stopped the ball, but did not clear, and Smith made no mistake in scor- • ing. Petone could not equalise, and the game ended: Diamonds 3, Petone 2. Mr. G. Jackson was the referee.
