PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Petone Borough Council met last night. Preseut: The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie), Councillors D. M'Carthy, J. Ashley, J. Cumming, V. Jacobson, J. W.

Pearson, J. W. Longman, and W. H. Edwards. The Wellingtoir Hockey Association wrote accepting the council's offer ut" a ground on the Recreation Ground Mr. K. Lang asked for permission to trap opossuuia on the Waterworks Reserve The Borough Engineer (Mr. a. (iowie) considered that it was not advisable to grant the application. Councillor Cumming disagreed with this view, and contended that it' the applicant were allowed to trap the oposiuuis he would do so in a legitimate way. His motion that the application be granted was carried. The question of royalties was raised and it was decided to grant the application on the conditions that a royalty of 6d per* skin were paid and that care was taken with the disposal of the carcasses to preserve the purity of the water. The Borough Solicitors (Messrs. Kirk and Harding) gave legal advice on the question of widening Locky and Nevis streets. It was stated that legal difficulties would be met with i£ the council attempted to widen the streets, the council, having no power to do so under the present legislation. Councillor Jacobson: "The land adjoining the street is not ours, and we cannot take land from private people." The Mayor said it was a public right-of-way and a very convenient thoroughfare. The council might be able to come to some agreement with Mr. Odlin, whereby lie might help to keep the street in order. Councillor Jacobson said that Nevis street would remain open in any case, and lie considered that the cost of carrying out the widening work was not justified. He moved that the letter be received and Mr. Odlin informed of the position/ and the motion was carried. It was decided that the superannuation scheme under the National Provident Fund would commence on Ist September.
