LOWER, HUTT BOROUGH

COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held yesterday. Present: Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor), and Councillors A. M'Baiu, W. G. Meldrum, E Waldie, A. F. Roberts, A. J. Hobbs, and X Campbell. Messrs. Seaton, Sladden, and.Pavitt advised that the firm regretted being unableto act in a consulting capacity in connection with the erection of the new brid"e. The Mayor and Councillor Roberts were appointed delegates to a conference in Wellington on the Hutt basin water supply proposal. The following recommendations of the Bylaws Committee were approved:—That buses be not allowed to use the stopping place north of the Town Hall until ten minutes before their starting time, and that a parking plaice for buses be provided m Queen's road; that a temporary stand for carriers be appointed on the west side of Main street between Queen's and Waterloo roads; that the council recommend the bus licensing authority to alter the proposed route for Ingham's buses to be from Moera Settlement, via Randwick road, Ludlam crescent, Bellevue road, Bloomfield terrace, Knight's road, .Bunuy street, Queen's road, and Main street. The following recommendations of the itcserves Committee ware approved*— That the Eastern Hutt School Committee be asked to reconsider its decision not to take over the Heke street reserve; that a portion of Randwick road west of the ramp be closed, and that the Community Committee of the Moera Settlement be allowed to erect a hall thereon subject to certain conditions safeguarding the council's rights. Councillor M'Bain reported in connection with the Alicetown playground that the Hutt Central School adhered to its decision not to take over and maintain this reserve. The question was again referred to the Reserves Committee.

The Works Committee reported that the Borough Engineer having interviewed Mr. Gaisford, who had been appointed to watch the construction-of the new bridge on behalf of the Public Works Department, it had been decided to inform the contractors immediately that, except in special cases where the written sanction of the Borough Engineer had been obtained, the specifications were %o be strictly adhered to.

The Bylaws Committee reported that after careful consideration it could not accede to the request of the Business Men a Association that vehicles should be allowed to stand for one hour in any portion of the Main street, and all day in two portions of the Main street.

The Finance Committee recommended that a loan be raised, at a rate of not more than 6 per cent, interest and Vk per cent, sinking fund, to pay for the council's share in the new bridge (£5797); that a lien be placed on all Native land on which the rates are unpaid.
