WORK AT PETONE
At last night's meeting of the Pctonc Borough Council, a letter was received from the Secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, asking if the council intended to subsidise to the extent of 30a in the £ 'the sum of £.100 which had been allocated to the council from the Poppy Bay funds, and if the council would proceed to relieve the unemployment prevalent in the borough among returned soldiers. Councillor Jacobson said that there were over 100 unemployed on the borough's list and he considered that the works committee should meet at an early date to ascertain the amount of i money available and decide on definite works to be done immediately. The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Konzic), said that there were a number of very distressing eases in the borough, and the subsidised amount from the R.S.A. would help considerably. It was decided to grant a subsidy of 30s in the £, and the matter was referred to the Works Committee.
