HUTT LOAN OF £5000
The Lower Hutt Borough Council decided last evening to apply for a loan of £.5000 nnder the "Unemployment Loans Act," in order to cope with the unemployed problem in its own district The Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand) said he had discussed the question with the Mayor of Wellington, and with the officials of the Local Bodies' Loans Board. There were a number of married men with families out of employment, and it was to deal with these that the loan moneys would be applied. A list prepared in the borough showed about "300. applicants, but a large number of these wore from outside the district, and it must be clearly understood that the money would be applied only for the relief of those who had resided in the borough for six months. If applications wero received from all-comers they would be inundated with outsiders. In asking the council to approve the loan, the Mayor said that none of the money would be spent without the sanction of the particular work of the council.
He suggested the formation of footpaths in Ludlam crescent and Randwiek road, and the formation of newly-dedi-1 eated streets. 'xhe money should be spent wisely, and the council should see that it got value. 'The works chosen should provide the maximum amount of labour for the minimum expenditure. It was probable that for the actual labour the Government would subsidise the expenditure & for &. In answer to a question the Mayor said it was proposed to pay award rates. '-...' Councillor Roberts, as chairman of the Works Committee, said work should be chosen which did not require plant or material.
