UPPER HUTT

The Upper Hutt Borough Council met last .night,.the Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) presiding over a full attendance of councillors.

Ihe secretary of the Post and Telegraph, Department wrote stating that the Department could not grant the council's recent request for a clock, at the Upper Hutt Post Office. It. was not the function of the Department to supply clocks for the use of the public, but if the council or residents agreed to meet the cost (which should not be more than £25) the Department would raise no objection to its erection provided the costs of installation and' maintenance were met b"y the council or residents.

The council adopted the report of the committee which attended the recent conference to decide the apportionment of cost ' for the construction of the proposed new Hutt River bridge, and agreed that the council should pay £475 (or 3.125 per cent.) as its share. The other apportionments (less the Government conrtibution) are: Lower Hutt Borough Council, 45.148 per cent.; Wellington City Council, 38.202 pee cent.; Petone Borough Council, 6.946 per cent.; and Hutt.County-Council. 6.579 pe* cent.

The report of the special committee set up to investigate the work of the council office was adopted, and read as follows* 'The committee found that the change, from the town district to the borough, the taking in of additional area, and the adoption of the two ward system, has created a considerable increase in the work of tfie office. It was found. that the work waa well carried put, the books were kept up-to-date, and that the Valance-sheet'waa ready for inspection. The committee U satisfied that the clerk requires the assistance of an experienced junior, and recommends that the office boy be replaced by a junior clerk at a salary to commence at £156 per annum."
