SEVERE BUFFETING

CANOPUS IN A STfORM

(By Tejegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day An exceptionally, stormy trip from Westport was experienced by the Canopus, which reached Auckland on Saturday afternoon. The vessel left Westport at 2 o ?clgck on Tuesday morning, and in ordinary circumstances should/have- arrived on Thursday: evening. A northerly gale with rough head seas was encountered shortly after leaving Westport, and owine to the severity of the storm the Canopus was unable to take the usual route via the west coast of the North Island and Cape Maria Van Diemen. After battling against heavy seas south of Cape Egmont the vessel had to turn back, and .'■ the course was Bet through Cook Strait and up to Auckland via the east coast. The c-idi-tions were very boisterous in the Bay of Plenty, and when the vessel was' ncaring Cuvier Island on Friday afternoon a torrential rain fell, obscuring all landmarks. This necessitated the steamer being hove-to for about twelve hours. It is very seldom a steamer comes to Auckland from Westport via the east coast, as the distance is over 150 miles further than via the t west coast and Cape Maria. -
