MANAWATU MOUNTEDS

SPORTS AT LEVIN

(Special to "The Evening Post")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. Brilliant sunshine prevailed for the military sports held by the 6th (Manawatu) Mounted Rifles at their camp on the Levin racecourse on Thursday. There was a large attendance. The eve»ts were of the cavalry order, and large fields were witnessed in all the contests. The judges were Captain Gibbons and Lieutenant Lodge, for horse show and mounted events; Captain J. M.. Stewart; for the dismounted tug-ot'-war; and Captain Webber, for the % dismounted relay race. The hunting event aroused great enthusiasm among soldiers and civilians alike, and each of the 21 mounts had its barrackers. The jumping was over four hurdles on the inside course and a double brush jump on the outside. All the riders show.cd good horsemanship, and it is a testimony to their skill that there was not a.mishap of any kind, which is an outstanding circumstance, for such a large entry. . The officers hospitably entertained visitors at afternoon tea on the lawn in front or the officers' mess, and throughout the afternoon selections were played by Miss Rikibana's orchestra, adding greatly to the pleasure of the outing.
