ATTACK ON NANKING

FIGHTING IN PROGRESS

SHANGHAI, 16th March. Practically the entire Cantonese army is concentrating in.an attack on Nanking. The theatre of war has thus shifted to 100 miles north of Shanghai; Cantonese are reported to be within thirty miles of Nanking, and heavy fighting is in progress. ■ The direct menace to Shanghai is temporarily removed, but the authorities are not relaxing their precautions and preparations. Fifty Spanish bluejackets landed yesterday and 500 French colonial infantry from IridoChina are due shortly.

Never in history has there been such an international assembly of navies as now in Shanghai harbour. Every nation owning a navy is representated. The- congestion is added to by idle merchantmen.
