CANTERBURY MARKETS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.!

CHRISTCHURCH, Bth February. Purchases of wheat are taking place in Canterbury to a moderate extent, but there is no rush about the business For deliveries this week 5s 9d on trucks has been paid, but for delivery "when ready" 5s 6d for Tuscan and 5s 7d for Hunters is the prevailing quotation. A good deal of wheat has been, sold for poultry -purposes. ' ■

The oats and seeds market is unaltered, the absence of a buying demand stopping speculation.

Heavy barley yields are more than supplying the wants of contract growers for the time being, and a "free" "barley ig practically impossible . .of sale.. The .nominal quotation is 4s on trucks as'against 0s 6d for "contract" barley. Potatoes are in better demand. Th« exceptionally-low prices, apparently have appealed to Auckland traders, who to-day "were buying on a basis of £4 a ton on trucks, ss-per ton more thatf .lagi week. Values to farmers are from £2 15s :i'o £2 17s 6d on trucks. ' - '

Onions-are disposed to be.reasier,- from £3 15s- to £4 per ton being -quoted- on trucks. The crop, will be earlier than expected, deliveries in cases being made next week. The Canterbury crop is reported' to be fair, although there is a good deal b£ •variation. . .
