(Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. When a statement made by an accused man to a , constable was read in the Supreme Court yesterday, defending counsel objected to certain passages referring to the accused's previous convictionsl Mr. Justice Herdman said that it was quite in order for the whole statement to be read.
The constable, in evidence, said that the accused refused to sign the statement, although he said it was true, and he gave a reason for his refusal. Counsel: "What was his reason?" Witness; "He said a solicitor advised him never to sign a statement made to a police constable." (Laughter.) His.Honor: "And a very good reason, too." (Renewed laughter.)
