CALEDONIAN CARNIVAL

Owing to unfavourabb weather, the C'abdonian Carnival, which was to have opened on Saturday afternoon at the Kilbirnie Reserve, had to bs postponed, and the carnival will now be officially opened to-night, at 8 o'clock, by the Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood), Sir John' Luke, M.P., and the Chief (Captain R. H. Nimmo). The object of the carnival is to raise funds for the building of an up-to-date hall in Wellington, and all those who have the sympathies of the object at heart will no doubt lose no time in expressing their sympathy in ci practical way. A comprehensive programme has been arranged. Erected in the centre of the grounds is a boxing platform, and the Wellington Boxing Association has arranged to stage some first-clar,.i bouts, which should prove a great attraction, Jamito and other brilliant boxers taking part. This evening, the Caledonian Pipe Band will be in at-" tendance, .md there will be Highland danciii^' qn the br>r;in_ platform. Saturday evonin'; will koo a novel attraction in a brilliant fireworks display by Chinese citizens. Arrangements have been made to accommodate "thousands-of people, and ill* Wellington Regimental Band will play selections during the evening. Other events to take place include yacht and motor-boat races, life-saving displays, and tugs-of-war. There will be plenty o£ sideshows, and at night the grounds will b« brilliantly lighted. Each evening there will be ja?.z dancing in a lnjye marqueej with a full orchestra under Mr. Percy Carter. Two fancy dress dances for the kiddies will also be held-
