PERSONAL MATTERS
Mr. W. A. Veitch has been chosen by the National Party to be a member of the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation which is to 'visit Australia in September, to attend the conference of the Empire Parliamentary Association. The Eev. Clarence Eatoii, who lias been seriously ill for some' months, has returned to the city from tho-\ North, where he has been recuperating. Mr. Eaton will resume Iris pastorate at Wesley Church; Taranaki street, on Sunday.
Mr. J. C. Scanlan, governor of the Terrace Gaol, who was retired after thirty-eight years' service, was on Wes nesday presented by Mr. I. Salek/ visiting Justice, on behalf of the gaol staff, with an easy chair, and a. dinner set for Mrs. Scanlan. Mr. Salok referred to the excellent work done by the retiring governor, and the esteem in which ha was held by his staff.' Others present who also spoke of tho excellent Bervice rendered by Mr. Scanlan were Mr. T. P. Mills, secretary of tho Prisoners' Aid Society; Major Greenfield, of the Salvation Army; Mr. D. C. Bates;.and representatives of tho Point Ealswell Reformatory.
