TARIFF ADJUSTMENT
AUSTRALIA AND SOUTH AFRICA.
(Received 24th March, 2 p.m.) ; MELBOURNE, This Day. . The House rf Representatives, considering the tariff; increased the import duty on maize from Is 6d, 2s 6d, and 3a, to 2s 6d, 3s, and 3s 6d. In regard to this the Minister of Customs, Mr. H. K. Pratten explained that steps were being taken to abrogate the commercial treaty with South Africa, which would be replaced by a new reciprocal treaty. This was the outcome of the action of the South African Ministry last year materially altering the terms of preference; wliich she gave Australia for benefits received tinder the 1906 treaty, but change would be made in no unfriendly spirit.
