HIGH PRICES, CURTAILED DEMAND.
Writing London, 24th December, Htmn. Dalgety, and Co. advises that reduced wholesale prices of 168s to 170s per cwt for' first-grade new season's New Zealand butter "have not by any means spread throughout the retail trade: some shops are down to Is 8d per lb for best quality and Is 6d per lb for fine, but there are still many shops where 2s and is lOd per lb are the ruling figures. There is not the slightest doubt that the long period of high prices has seriously curtailed demand, and It must be borne in mind that It is always more difficult to get the public off margarine in the winter than In the summer, the defects being much less noticeable In cold weather than in hot. The Importance of margatne as a factor In the situation can be gathered from the figures of the quantities Imported. The Imports of margarine during November totalled 129,180cwt, as against only 118,8Ucwt butter >from New Zealand and Australia together." i
