Mr. P. J. O'Eegan returned from Auckland to-day.

Mr. C. H. Courtney, secretary of the Rongotea Dairy Company, has been appointed secretary of the Eltham Dairy Company, out of 111 applicants.

The Mayor (Mr. G. B. Norwood) is progressing well, bxit it is improbable that he will be able to return to his duties before the middle of next week, at tho earliest.

Councillor E. A. Dawson, of the Eastbourne Borough Council, who is at prosent on a visit to England, was granted an extra three months' leave of absence by the Eastbourne Borough Council last evening.

Mr. H. J. Manson, New Zealand Government representative at Melbourne and Acting-Commissioner in Australia for the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, returned to .Wellimton this morning from a visit to Dunedin. He leaves for Australia by the Tahiti on Tuesday.

A Press Association telegram from Cambridge states that Mr. David Congalton, one of the leading business men of Cambridge, died very suddenly last night of heart trouble. He was held in high esteem. He was Master of the Masonic Lodge, and a prominent member of the Choral Society, and Presbyterian Church. The deceased helped all deserving local organisations.

After living for 51 years at Palmerston North, Mr. Richard Smith, one of the best-known of Manawatu's earlier settlers, passed away_ yesterday at the age of 74. Mr. Smith was a familiar figure in the early settlement of the d?strict, and in his trade_ of_ builder was connected intimately" with the growth of the town. Of late years he had lived in retirement, and for some time past has suffered from illness.

An enthusiastic gathering, at which the most cordial appreciations of the part the guest had taken in the industry, was held by some fifty members of the Film Exchange Association at the Grand Hotel yesterday afternoon, when a complimentary luncheon wa3 tendered' to Mr. E. J. Eighton, managing director of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., which company has given up the picture hiring side of its business. The chairman (Mr. C. F. Eskell, Universal Films) said. they were honouring Mr. Eighton in appreciation of his woik on their behalf. He had given the association wonderful help. He regretted that their guest would not be so closely in touch with them in the future, but felt suro his advice and assistance would be available if sought. Mr. O. N. Gillespie extolled the urbanity and business ability of Mr. Eighton, who had watched the interests .of the industry jealously, and had done splendid ■work. He presented Mr. Righton with a handsome brass smoker's companion in token of their esteem and affection. Mr. Righton, replying, reviewed the history of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., and told .of its inception from a fusion of Fuller and Hayward interests, which were then forced into the picture business. The latest move waa the formation of Australasian Films, Ltd. Recalling many familiar names associated with the business, Mr. Righton particularly mentioned Mr. Barrio Marschel;
