RAILWAY COTTAGES
The railway cottages at Paekakariki came in for some criticism by Mr. W. H. Field '(Otaki) in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. '
The conditions at the cottages at the present, said Mr. Field, could only bo described as deplorable. The true remedy was to procure more land in a healthy situation and bui^l new cottages. The new railway line would not be through for six or seven years, and it was impossible that the men. should live in the present cottages during that time. The men could not afford to buy cottages of- their own, as they did not know when they would be shifted. It was the bounden duty of the Railway Department to see that the position was at once set right. There had already been two deaths of children in the cottages, and the people Of the district were beginning to fear an epidemic. He urged that the cottages should be connected with the county water supply.
