THE LITTLE PIGS HAD DONE IT
What he considered the very small amount provided on the Estimates this session for the killing of- wild pigs, was ■referred to by Mr. R. Masters (Stratford) in the House of Representatives yesterday. "Do you mean killing pigs On Crown lands?" asked the Minister of Lands (the Hon. A. D. M'Leod). Mr. Masters: "I mean killing them everywhere." The Minister referred to rabbits. Mr. Masters pointed out that £1400 had been provided for killing keas in the South. "They kill sheep the same as pigs kill lambs," he observed. Mr. M'Leod: "On Crown lands."
"All the keas are not on Crown lands," protested the member for Stratford. "I don't suppose they stick to Crown lands altogether." He said the Crown lands in his district. If the Minister thought were the breeding places of the wild pigs £250 was enough to cover his responsibility, or the responsibility of the State in providing these places for the breeding of pigs, he. begged to differ with him. Mr. M'Leod said that other items would be found elsewhere in the Estimates.
"Well, what is tho total altogether?" asked the speaker. "£650,"
Mr. F. Langstone (Waimarino): "Not enough." Mr. Masters observed that the member for Waimarino could absorb the whole of the money in his own district, and he felt sure the member for Waitomb could do with £1000.
"One million would do if the Government could find it," Baid the Minister. ■
Mr. Masters: "This is a matter of necessity. The Minister knows that. He understands the pig business better than the Minister of Finance understands the financial position."
