ALL-FOR-AUCKLAND

"Why should there be an all-for-Auck-land policy in the matter of racing permits?" inquired Mr. S. G. Smith (Tarariakijr when the Estimates were under consideration in the House of Representatives last night. "Ever since 1912, when it came into power, the Government haa been.an all-for-Auckland Government."

The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F_. Bollard) replied that according to population Auckland was entitled to 20 more permits than it had now. Mr. A. L. Monteith (Wellington East): "You didn't meet Sir George, did you?" ",Oh, no," replied the Minister. Perhaps Mr. Smith was dissatisfied because he only got one permit instead of two. The population of Auckland Province was 437,794—0ne-third of that of the whole Dominion—and that of Taranaki was 68,000. Mr. R. Masters (Stratford): "Quote Hawkes Bay." The Minister replied that Hawkes Bay had more than its share of permits. The member for Taranaki was putting in an application for another permit, but he would have to take his chance with the rest of the Dominion.
